I am research and teaching associate at TU Berlin (Department of Architectural Theory). I studied Philosophy in Rome, Freiburg i. B. and Berlin and obtained the doctorate degree from the TU Berlin in 2015. The book resulting from the dissertation was published by De Gruyter in 2016 in the series Actus et Imago, edited by Horst Bredekamp and Jürgen Trabant, with the title Versinnlichung. I teach philosophy and architectural theory with a focus on aesthetics and spatial theory at the TU Berlin since 2014, developing interdisciplinary seminars between philosophy and architecture. I have been teaching also at the UdK and at the University of Kassel. In my current research, I explore the role of aesthetic practices and media in design processes including the challenge of the Anthropocene. I am president of the non-profit association  Fieldstations and member of the Netzwerk Architekturwissenschaft und DGÄ. Since 2011, I have been the co-director of the Freigeist-Akademie für Geisteswissenschaften. My publications include: Versinnlichung (De Gruyter, 2016); Media Agency, with Christophe Barlieb (transcript, 2020); Artefakte des Entwerfens, with Anna Hougaard et al. (TU Verlag, 2020); Construction and Design Manual: Experimental Diagrams (DOM publishers 2022) and Epistemic Artefacts, with Matthias Ballestrem (AADR 2023).

Book Epistemic Artefacts. A Dialogical Reflection on Design Research in Architecture.

Edited by Matthias Ballestrem and Lidia Gasperoni, AADR 2023

Architectural artefacts are negotiated as epistemic objects, an autonomous and innovative form of knowledge capable of inaugurating and institutionalising architectural research. The backbone of this publication is a dialogue between the architect Matthias Ballestrem and the philosopher and architectural theorist Lidia Gasperoni. In a vibrant discussion, they consider the epistemic value of the architectural artefact, the role of research practices in making this knowledge explicit and accessible, and the criteria for qualifying as design-based research. Alex Arteaga, Fabrizia Berlingieri, Peter Bertram, Helga Blocksdorf, Anđelka Bnin-Bninski, Marta Fernández Guardado, Joerg Fingerhut, Anke Haarmann, Rolf Hughes, Rachel Hurst, Daniel Norell, Tomas Ooms, Claus Peder Pedersen, Tim Simon-Meyer, and Philip Ursprung have added short comments and images to enrich the arguments with criticism, extensions, associations, and references. An afterword by Marcelo Stamm provides a theoretical reflection on a possible taxonomy of epistemic artefacts.

Fieldstations Educational Platform: Anthropocene Pedagogies in Architecture

In 2021 I launched a call for teaching practices and organised the first workshop at the Department of Architectural Theory (TU Berlin) presenting some pedagogical approaches in architecture. In 2022 I launched another call for practice in collaboration with Andrea Rossi. Since then, we have devoted a great deal of energy to contacting people, talking to them about their current pedagogy at the intersection between architecture, landscape, and urbanism. We asked a wide range of educators – at different stages of their academic career – to describe topics, methods and effects generated by the pedagogies they have developed to respond to contemporary challenges of the Anthropocene. We have collected around 25 practices, bringing together around 50 people, engaged with spatial education. During this time, the idea emerged to set up a platform dedicated to creating a space for exchange and discussion. Between September 2022 and January 2023, Till Zihlmann and Jennifer Raum joined the organisation team. The Anthropocene describes an environment which is in an alarming condition. For more information see Fieldstations. The core question of the Platform for Anthropocene Pedagogies in Architecture is: How can we expand the pedagogical duties of architecture repositioning human and non-human capacity of designing shared environments? The Platform is a space of sharing and gathering practices of experimentation as a transformative field radically engaged with architectural pedagogy. This platform should become a shared field of methodological and institutional discourses that cross the boundaries between academia and practice. We take the time to understand and implement educational practices. The educational platform is working as a “collaborative field agent” that senses, adapts, and creates the contemporary tasks of the Anthropocene in education. The Platform is an ongoing project that is meant to expand and cross the boundaries of design education, embedding experimental approaches.

Event Lecture Series „Architectural Ethnography“, Start 25 April 2022, 6pm

Architectural ethnography deals with the manifold forms of coexistence between people and architecture. In cooperation between HCU Hamburg, TU Berlin and the Netzwerk Architekturwissenschaft, the lecture series „Architectural Ethnography“ will be held this summer term online. Given the growing challenges for the planning disciplines to make sensitive, situated and appropriate spatial interventions, this series is about discussing the potential of ethnography in analysis and design. Internationally guests from the fields of sociology, anthropology and architecture will provide insights into their architectural ethnographic practice and put theoretical and methodological considerations up for discussion. The series is curated by Sabine Hansmann (HCU, Architecture, Space and Society), Lidia Gasperoni (TU Berlin, Architectural Theory) and Séverine Marguin (TU Berlin, SFB Re-Figuration von Räumen). We would like to thank the Sutor Stiftung for its financial support.

Book Construction and Design Manual. Experimental Diagrams, DOM publishers 2022.

After its golden age in the last decades of the 20th century, diagramming is still an experimental practice today, but it focuses on the synthesis of complexity and on new disciplinary territories on the edge between humanities, art, architecture, urban planning and landscape. This manual presents experimental diagrams through sensing, analysing and transforming space. The contributions critically delineate diagrammatic behaviours in architectural history, present the design practices of offices such as AZPML and ishigami + associates, take the medium to its extreme consequences, and outline future trajectories.

Book Christophe Barlieb, Lidia Gasperoni (Hg.), Media Agency.
